OT: Whats with your attitude to the French?
I've noticed that some of you guys have rather disparaging (mostly Simpsons based) sig lines bagging the French. Is this a case of "what have you done for me lately"? or just short memories? America owes much of its nationhood to the French, but that seems to have been conveniently forgotten in the endless recycling of WWII stories of French capitulation.

You really have to ask? Around these parts fella, we don't like being told what to do by some frogs. Some people say the war may have been about oil for the U.S., if that is true.... oh, **** who cares.

I'm just tired of the arguement. Some of us just don't like the French, ok. I personally don't know that many French people, so all I can really say is that I do not like their diplomacy. Big deal. We're gonna do what we want, because we can, no matter what the French say or do. It just sucks that they SEEM to not like the U.S. and we kinda helped them out when Germany came to dinner.**** nice of them to help us out a while back too. I never really purchased much French stuff anyway and 5 am is NO TIME to make a good case either way. We're loud and they are supposed to be snobby from what I hear. the real assholes are those**** Aussies anyway Buncha drunken fools with their nude beaches. Why can't you be closer?

I wouldn't have anything against the French at all...if they would just learn the meaning of the word "Soap."

They are snotty and bitter that thier colonial empire fell apart and that we are the worlds only superpower. Notice that every colony they ever had revolted against them and went communist. Remember when we were going to bomb Libya, and France wouldn't let us use their air space? France pulled out of NATO because they didn't have a big enough say. When Nazi Germany fell why did we give France a zone of occupation? They weren't the victors. We gave them equal treatment like the Russians and British (who both did the real fighting). We have done more for fucking France and her pride than they have ever done for us.

This is a cemetary that contains the remains of 10,000 american soldiers who gave their lives for the liberation of France. **** those ungrateful bastards. Next time the Germans conquer them, and it will happen again I assure you, they can keep them.

Can you imagine a scenario where the US would be willing to fight the EU sometime in the future?

You never know. I think as long as man roams the earth there will always be hostility and a potential for future conflict. Thats out nature.

I've got nothing against them. I think all this French bashing is silly, immature, and ignorant. They're a sovereign nation that's entitled to feel however they want about the war on Iraq.

Sure, if we hadn't helped in WWII, Germany might never have been defeated, but if they hadn't helped us in the Revolutionary War, we might still be a British colony. They sent us weapons and troops throughout the war and played a huge direct role in helping us defeat the British at the Battle of Yorktown.

It also might be said that we wouldn't have gotten involved with in one of the most controversial wars in this nations history if it wasn't for the French. In a round-a-bout sort of way.

It took a long time before anyone mentioned Viet Nam. I was wondering if anyone would ever make note of that, but I guess it would be sort of antithetical to discuss how the Vietnamese beat the French there. Because then they couldn't make fun of the French without making fun of themselves.

The whole hating-the-French thing is ludicrous and stupid, and so closedminded that it's stunning.

I've heard this argument before. Don't think for a minute that the French helped the US in the revolutionary war because they truly cared for the US. At that time, it was anything to hurt England. The Dutch too, as did several other European nations, did their part in helping the US gain it's independence, but that wasn't love for the US either. It was about being opportunistic while the British military was spread fairly thinly.

Read up on the XYZ affair to see just how well France and the US got along in the late 1700s. "Millions for defense, sir, but not one cent for tribute."

Don't forget the American Civil War. If the French hadn't underestimated the Mexicans, and hadn't had so much of their resources invested in capturing and controlling Mexico, they would have equipped the Confederates. Fortunately, they could afford little aid to the south. Not that they were fans of the Confederacy, they just wanted anything that would weaken the United States.

I am half English and half German, hating the French is in my blood.

You have to admit Chirac telling the Eastern Europeans to shut up and threatening their membership in the EU was pathetic. For all their protestations over this war, it all boiled down to protecting their countries Iraqi investments and a EU power play(which backfired on them).

I have an aunt who is (more or less) French. It's not the people I don't like, it's their smarmy government, which is more annoying than ours in it's finger-wagging and holier-than-thou attitude.

And Socialism is always an easy target.

I do it mostly because it amuses me.

edit: It amuses me because I'm not a big fan of socialism and also because the French have never acted in a manner that I would expect an ally to act.

Fair enough, flerd, but how many wars are fought for altruistic reasons anyways? Your same argument can be turned right around and used towards our involvement in WWII - the example the French bashers seem to lean on. Did we go fight for the liberation of Europe and try to set up democratic, capitalist states in as much of the post-war continent as we could keep from the Russians out of the goodness of our hearts and our love for the French or did we do it because we wanted favorable trade partners? Or maybe we didn't care about them and realized the Nazis might possibly pose a direct threat to us some day if we didn't do something? I doubt we went to war because we're swell folks who didn't mind sacrificing our own for the sake of others without expecting any return on investment.

Indeed. I have always found it impressive how strongly the US acted in the entire span of the war, which was, as we all know, between Dec. 1941 and 1945.
