O's fire manager Mazilli
Mazzilli dismissed by Orioles
Bench coach Perlozzo named interim manager
By Gary Washburn / MLB.com

The Orioles completed one of the most tumultuous weeks in team history by removing Lee Mazzilli as manager on Thursday afternoon, concluding a 1 1/2-year tenure that had a good start but a difficult ending.
Bench coach Sam Perlozzo was named interim manager for the remainder of the season.

The club made the announcement before its series finale against the Los Angeles Angels. The Orioles have lost eight games in a row and are 9-28 since June 21, falling from first in the American League East to fourth, 10 1/2 games behind, entering Thursday.

Mazzilli was in the second year of a two-year contract that included two one-year options. He led the club to a 78-84 record in his first season and the organization appeared to be on an upswing.

In the winter, the Orioles acquired right fielder Sammy Sosa to an already productive offense and the club got off to a fast start, claiming first place for nearly two months before a six-game losing streak in June. And then everything went wrong.

The Orioles were decimated by injuries to Sosa, catcher Javy Lopez, pitcher Erik Bedard, outfielders Larry Bigbie and Luis Matos and third baseman Melvin Mora. And the starting pitching, a strength in the first two months, broke down.

After winning the first two games following the All-Star Break, the Orioles dropped 16 of 18 games, including Wednesday's 8-4 loss.

On Monday, Major League Baseball announced that first baseman Rafael Palmeiro tested positive for steroids and was ordered to serve a 10-day suspension, shocking the organization and damaging Palmeiro's legacy.

The club then went out and lost 10-1 on Tuesday to Anaheim, looking deflated and listless.

Players recently voiced displeasure with Mazzilli in private, and according to a club source, shortstop Miguel Tejada, once a big Mazzilli supporter, called a team meeting and said the team would have to win despite Mazzilli.

Perlozzo, 54, is in his 10th season with the Orioles. He spent his first five seasons as third base coach before moving into the role of bench coach in 2001. He is popular among the players and was a candidate for the job after the club dimissed Mike Hargrove following the 2003 season. Perlozzo previously was a coach with the Cincinnati Reds, Seattle Mariners and New York Mets.

Maybe they found out he was the one who put steroids in Palmeiro's slurpee.

The manager is always the one who takes the fall. That's just the way the system works.

I am actually a distant relative of Mazilli. Can't say I like the move, but when you lose 16 of 18 and the team's support as well, you're not going to last.

Dusty will leave the Cubs (maybe by getting fired) and manage the Dodgers next year, maybe the year after.

I don't think so. I see him going to the Reds. They'll make the playoffs a couple times and fizzle in the first round. Then he'll be let go and ride off into the sunset. But I guess time will tell if I'm right.
