Forbes magazine says hello to Winnipeg Thrashers
Ozanian (the writer for Forbes mag) predicted the viability of at least two NHL franchises will become a relevant topic very soon.

"The two places where I think there will not be teams in two years are Carolina and Atlanta," Ozanian said, "and I still need more convincing in Florida and Nashville."

What does 'least two' mean? Surely Carolina and Pittsburgh are better choices?

I can't believe they're still printing bunk like this after the labor mess of last year. If the PA had won the battle, I might've believed the article.

If Winnipeg could support an NHL team, the Roadrunners would still be playing in Phoenix. If Carolina and Nashville keep winning and drawing, they got nothing to worry about. Pittsburgh, on the other hand, is another story.

According to a buddy of mine who lives in Raleigh, the 'Canes get pretty good support. The problem there is much like Atlanta: 7:00 start times make it**** near impossible to get there on time with traffic. Atlanta and Raleigh will be fine. Sunrise may not have the demographics to support a team, though.

Really, in the end, it just comes down to whether or not your team can grab a wealthy owner who just wants to enjoy an expensive hobby, realizing he's going to lose money every year.

Phoenix, Arizona has 2 hockey teams!?! That's clinches it. They're selling snow cones in Hell.

have a friend that owns a minor league team and according to him, owners in florida to extremely well. at one point his dad was going to buy a second team in florida to help support their team. he couldn't explain it either, but for some reason hockey in florida is viable. and i'll take an owner's candid conversation about the financial status over a reporter's any day.

and if the atlanta spirit are going to sell anything off, the hawks are a bigger looser, ha!

If Forbes had any detailed research to back up their publishings on the NHL, maybe it would be worth listening to. But what they're putting out are basically guestimations, hoping that since it has the name "Forbes" behind it, people will give it credibility (a moderately intelligent ape can tell it has little or none).

To be fair, they do have a lot on their plate so they don't really have the time to detail it. But it would have been best if they'd have just kept their trap shut about the NHL; throwing together two or three numbers and trying to pass it off as being credible doesn't look that good for them.

Never happen unless that golden goose of TV revenue croaks.

Does the Atlanta Spirit own the arena as well? I can't imagine them cutting loose one of their primary tenants that occupies 40+ nights a year

The Thrashers and Hawks are tied to the debt of the arena. They cannot be moved very easily. Forbes just showing their ignorance. Winnipeg's building it too small.

If any city was to get a NHL team I would expect Portland or maybe Houston. I think ultimately Carolina might have to move or even Nashville, but not Atlanta. The team has been drawing strong crowds now that we have a decent roster.

Nice to read articles like that, but doesn't Burnside live here? He's probably a little biased about hockey in Atlanta.

"Pretty" good, I guess, but the lower bowl was nowhere near full on Saturday night against a division rival. Some of the midweek games we expect to draw, like Toronto, have seemed awfully empty this year, too. I wouldn't really call Raleigh's nightly support all that good.

Carolina is 29th in attendance which is not exactly "good support" when you have a team that is high in the standings.
