With Gordon, the Phillies have a 'better' chance to beat the Braves
Of course they have to get the lead first..

Free-agent right-hander Tom Gordon has signed a three-year contract to be the Phillies' closer, has learned.

The value of the deal is believed to be $18 million.

The Yankees made a late push for Gordon, increasing their offer from two to three years in their bid to retain him as Mariano Rivera's setup man.

The Orioles, Tigers and Indians also were pursuing Gordon.

In addition, the Yankees have been in negotiations with free-agent reliever Kyle Farnsworth, but have yet to close a deal. The Rangers also are pursuing Farnsworth, and it's possible that Farnsworth is still considering an offer to return to the Braves. If the Yankees lose him, they will be scrambling to find a set-up man.

Gordon, 38, will replace Billy Wagner, who recently signed a four-year, $43 million deal with the Mets. He went 5-4 with a 2.57 ERA and two saves for the Yankees last season, striking out 69 batters in 80 2-3 innings. Gordon allowed eight homers, his most since 1997 — when he gave up 10 while splitting the season between Boston's bullpen and starting rotation.

The deal is pending a physical, which Gordon will take on Saturday.

Philadelphia still needs a set-up man because it doesn't plan to re-sign Ugueth Urbina. Ryan Madson, who filled that role before Urbina came to the Phillies last June, could return to that spot, or move into the starting rotation. The Phillies added some bullpen depth by agreeing Wednesday to a contract with former Milwaukee right-hander Julio Santana.

If he can be as consistent as he was in Boston and Chicago as a closer in Philly, the Phillies could've gotten themselves a gem.
