Natural Gas Providers? Just wondering who y'all use as your provider/marketer? I need to get set up with service here soon and just wanted to hear peoples' experiences with the various companies. |

I went with Shell because, at the time I signed up, they had the best variable rate. I haven't bothered to change. You can look up online the rates each of the providers charge. Currently, they're all pretty close in price. |

Thought we did this topic already? Fixed rate with Georgia Natural Gas, somewhere in the .95-.99/therm range...think it .979, No complaints. |

Seems like a shitty time of year to lock in a rates. With all the work that needs to be done on it, I won't even be fully moved in until the second week of March so my usage should be bare minimum for close to a month. Should I go with a variable rate for a month or two then lock in during springtime when the weather's warm? |

Not a good time to lock in a fixed NatGas rate. The chart shows monthly average near-term futures prices for gas in blue (right hand scale) versus Shell's variable rate in pink (left hand scale). A look at Shell's price history shows that when gas rates are low, variable rates are below fixed rates (they don't want you to lock in low prices), but when gas prices are high, fixed rates are lower than variable (they want you to spend too much.) My fixed rate expired in December. It looks like the best time to lock in is probably around May, and I hope to get it at least under 1.10 then, if not under 1.00. |

quote:Not necessarily. Right after I closed on my house and moved in - brand new house, btw, no previous owners - I got my very first gas bill. As I recall it was in the neighborhood of $150, not including the activation charges. This was back in '02, when Natural Gas was still reasonably cheap. I had lived in the house for less than two weeks, I think when the first billing period ended. Because it was a new house, and thus a new meter, they billed the first bill assuming a 0 reading on the meter. I tried to explain to Snapping Shoals (which was the SCANA middle-man company I was given) and explained the situation and that there's no way I could have used that much gas, since it hadn't been cold those weeks in March, and I had hardly cooked, and hadn't craked up the gas fireplace at all (all true, btw). I tried to tell tham that the only way I could have used that much gas was if the builders had used the extra gas while they were building my house. They weren't willing to budge at all, and I had to pay the whole freakin' thing. Possed me off, too. |

https://cs.gas-south.com/roe/CampaignStart.aspx?Campaign=1010 Don't lock in now, but consider it next month when the new prices are out. Use the link above and sign up on line, and you'll get a $25 Visa gift card, an introductory variable rate, and $.02 off the posted rate. Your first month (variable) will be at $1.129. Next month's prices should be lower, so after you get the $1.129 for a month you can lock in a fixed price thru next winter. Don't fall for the 6-month fixed rate some companies are promoting because that'll only last you thru the summer and you don't use much gas over that time period. If you lock in for 12 months at next month's prices and prices come down significantly after you lock, you can always cancel your contract for $50 and go with somebody else. If prices have come down enough you could make up the $50 in one winter month. Edit: In the interest of full disclosure, I am an advisor to Gas South and its parent. |

If it makes anyone feel better, we have a friend in Richmond who has a beautiful, historic, 3 storey home. Because it's brick walls (not brick clad wood), and single pane glass his gas bills run over $700/month in the winter. |

Most "brick" homes are brick clad, where you have a sammich, like this: brick, exterior sheathing, framing, lathe and plaster or sheetrock (or both) his house is: brick, lathe&plaster. No dead air space. His kitchen looks mighty cool with high ceilings and exposed brick on 2 walls - but on the other side o the brick is sub-freezing air. Brick is a better insulator than siding, but without dead air space it's much worse. |
