Trade Vick?
Another modest proposal from a guy at work. It's an interesting idea.

What say the Falcons trade Vick to Oakland for their 1st pick, start Schaub and draft Calvin Johnson?

Would the NFL let that happen, salary-wise?

or is that just the NBA that has to match salaries in a trade?

I vote yes.

Didn't they just fire Mora and hire Petrino pretty much specifically to get more out of Vick? If we trade Vick, did we need to fire Mora? (I think yes.) If we trade Vick, was Petrino the right choice? (I'll defer to the doodz what actually have time to watch 500 CF games. I saw Lullville twicet.)

Al likes the vertical passing game. Vick's strengths are running and throwing it downfield.

Damn your good. A strength of his is throwing it downfleld. The problem is that no one is usually down there to catch it.

Since when has that mattered? Keep up - it's all about the potential.

The NFL has no such rule. Just stay under the cap and you're okay.

I would have no problem with any trade that makes the team better.

If Schaub + Johnson > Vick, make the deal. Unless the offensive line gets A LOT better, I'm not sure it matters.

howevah, I don't think Oakland would give up the #1 overall pick for him.

When was the last time New England spent a high draft pick, or even a lot of money, on a wide receiver? Johnson is obviously a badass, but is any WR worth a #1?

I was under the impression that they hired Petrino because the entire team shat the bed for the last 10 weeks of the season.

Vick != The whole team

I think you could get more than 1 pick for Vick. But I like the concept.

I thought that Petrino was hired, at least in part, because they thought he was a good fit to work with Vick's unique set of tools.
Maybe I'm wrong, but if that is the case then a chunk of the rationale for hiring Petrino is gone if Vick is traded.

I know, but they seem to be able to fit receivers that nobody thinks are all that into their system successfully. Maybe everybody should rethink whether a superstar receiver can really be as big a difference maker as we think. Who are the best receivers still playing?

All 3 of the other teams have good receivers. NE can get by because of Brady.

Yes, it's the NBA that requires the salary match. The NFL doesn't. If the Raiders do take him, they just have to make sure they fit under the cap before the season starts next year.

I may be dreaming but isn't there some sort of rule that if you trade a player, the cap actually takes a hit? I thought this was one of the reasons there weren't a lot of trades in the NFL.

quote:
Under the old CBA, the team that dealt a player had to take the entire hit of cap acceleration that a trade produced this year, absorbing the player's remaining pro-rated yearly cap numbers all at once. Now teams are allowed to put off dealing with such a huge cap hit until the following year, freeing up room on this year's cap. In essence, the new CBA made the cap ramifications of a trade identical to the one a team faced when releasing a player after the June 1 deadline.
