A cartoon outrage!
Fire Department brass and rank and-file Bravest blasted the New York Post yesterday for a cartoon showing a fire-fighter telling a dying comrade at ground zero: " GOODBYE DEAR FRIEND. BY THE WAY, IS YOUR WIFE FREE TUESDAY?"

This followed a news story Monday about 11 fire-fighters who left their wives for the widows of colleagues lost in the terrorist attack.

They had been asked to act as fathers to the children who lost their dads on that day.

They ended up leaving their own wives and children, and moving in with the widows.

I went to the nypost.com but couldn't get the cartoon. Maybe one of you guys can.
It was by Sean Delonas.....and in Mondays paper.

I am not for censorship of any kind....but.....this is a disgrace!

The cartoon callously crosses any decent editorial boundaries to make light of this matter.

What the**** ae they gonna do next?

There's nothing wrong with the cartoon. The point of the cartoon is to show how reprehensible the actions of some of these fire fighters is, in the opinion of the artist. Of course it's outrageous. But there's nothing wrong with it.

A very dangerous situation, when a man counsels or supports a woman in emotional distress. Emotions can be very intimate, and quite often result in a bastardized love relationship.

Hear stories all the time about preachers, psychologists, etc. fall in that situation.

I guess with the recent resurgence of firemen as heroes, this story just hurts all the more.

Now there are 22 screwed up families instead of 11.

I think it's good to remind people that, no matter how brave some folks may be and no matter how much we owe them, they're still human beings after all is said and done.

There is always going to be a certain percentage of men that leave their wives for other women.Women they have access to. These just happen to be firemen involved with 9-11. It probably should not have been an article to begin with. It reflects badly on the rest of the firemen, and served no real purpose.

Seems obvious these guys weren't in happy marriages anyway. If they and those women really fell in love with each other, these things happen.

That said, I would be suspicious of my feelings in that situation. People tend to latch on to rescuers or similar people. I imagine it's much easier for these women to fill the gaping hole in their lives with the strong, brave people who were nearby as opposed to coping with the emptiness. I doubt it's psychologically healthy though.

I think you're right. If they want to do a story on how grief sometimes leads to this kind of thing and then mention that it even happened with 9/11 firefighter widows, I don't have a problem with that. But to do a whole expose on firefighters is the wrong angle, imo.

This is where I can have a day long debate with soneone over media bias. Forget political bias. There's too many reporters that don't try to "report" what happened. They look for the most sensational angle so they can sell more papers or ads or magazines or whatever.... and when the American public finally learns that these people are in business and have an agenda too, perhaps, they'll learn to think a little more for themselves. Although it gets heated sometimes, the good thing is that there's thoughtful debate here. Kudos to us.

How many hundreds of firemen were involved in 9-11? I believe 303 died. So roughly, 4% of these widows found happiness with someone else... big deal. Chances are, the firemen who left their wives were in crappy marriages to begin with.

Damn those firemen for being human.

Big deal? Yes, in my opinion. Find out why your marriage is crappy, and work on it. It's just selfish and damaging to the kids who now find themselves without a dad around.

4% is not a big number, but the kids affected by this could give a rats *** about 4%.

I forgave my parents long ago for screwing up our family with a divorce, but it sucks being a kid in a broken home.
